Cowboys of Florida:
The Movie and the Art

This movie is involved with the documentation of a little known and rapidly disappearing way of life.

Yes, there ARE cowboys in Florida. Real live rootin’ tootin' roping and riding cowboys. And they’ve been on the scene for over 250 years. In fact Florida vies with Texas as the number one cattle producing state in the USA.

THE MOVIE
This colorful film started out as an “ode” to the cowboys way of life. But it has transformed into a film encompassing more than could have ever been imagined. Developed over a course of three years, we soon realized that the life of the Florida Cowboy was changing; disappearing before our very eyes. But we had no idea it would happen so fast. The combination of the wrath of Charlie (the hurricane which destroyed huge tracts of central Florida) combined with the explosion of land values, have combined to forecast an end to large scale ranching in Florida.

This film captures the beauty of the old ways, many of which have not changed in hundreds of years, with the drama of encroaching civilization.

It is a beautiful and important film documenting America in the throes of change.

THE ART

At the same time that we've been "shooting" the cowboys for the documetary I've also been involved in the creation of a complete library of still images - "art" - if you will.

These images have been shown and sold in many galleries through the south. I produce them with a combination of photography, computer manipulation and magic.

GREAT FLORIDA CATTLE DRIVE

The first week in December 2006 we were privileged to gain access to the "Great Florida Cattle Drive '06". Last staged in 1995, this was an incredible assembly of over 400 riders on horseback, 20 or more covered wagons and 700 head of cattle. They joined together to re-enact one of the great traditions of "Cracker Cowboys" - that of the cattle drive from ranch to market. For four days and nights, this sturdy crew rode and walked, camped out under the stars, laughed, sang and enjoyed nature at her finest, traveling over 40 miles, driving the cattle in the Kissimmee cattle area. We covered the event with a six man crew and filmed over 18 hours of footage, including 35 intimate interviews. This is a tiny selection of footage from that wonderful week.
